The man behind many viral ads: Tanmay Bhat turns a year older

One of the most loved faces of the new media, Tanmay Bhat celebrates his 37th birthday on Sunday. While most people remember him for his work on YouTube, his career actually spans different medium including television, digital and stand-up comedy. Bhat has also written for award shows, created and acted in comedy videos and done vlogging. Of late, he has been creating quite a buzz in the advertising industry, with many calling him the new creative king.

Bhat’s first tryst with showbiz came at the age of 18 when he started writing for television shows. He owns writing credits in several fiction as well as non-fiction shows including participating in one as a contestant. Bhat has also written for many award shows, about which he has often spoken on the AIB podcast. During this stage, he also started exploring open mic events, and eventually made a name for himself as one of the earliest successful stand-up comics of India. He has been associated with some of the pioneering comedy troupes of the country including Weirdass Comedy, Cardinal Bengans, and the most famous AIB which was formed in 2013.

Over the past decade, Bhat’s career has seen a whole lot of ups and downs. The AIB YouTube channel, and its comedy sketches and parodies became a cultural phenomenon. Even after all these years, people still refer to and go back to many of the iconic AIB videos including the Honest series and their collaborations with Irfan Khan and Kangana Ranaut about the state of Bollywood. The group also introduced Indians to the concept of roast comedy (which also got them in big trouble!).

Just when things were looking up and plans to produce feature films under the AIB banner were being made, things went terribly wrong. Several controversies and FIRs later, Tanmay ventured into his solo YouTube career after stepping down as the CEO of AIB in 2019. Starting off as a live streamer, his content evolved into vlogs, meme reviews and viewing parties. 

Bhat’s first brush with advertising was in 2015 when AIB launched an advertising wing called VIgyapanti aimed at start-ups. It was during the lockdown in 2020 that he started working on advertisement scripts seriously, resulting in gems like the CRED ads featuring Rahul Dravid and Ravi Shastri and the Lenskart ads featuring Karan Johar and Peyush Bansal. In July 2023, he started a content studio with fellow comic and writer Devaiah Bopanna. Under this studio, they have worked on ads for Subway, Firebolt, Lenskart and Oyo among others.
