The Ministry of Consumer Affairs is reportedly seeking to target indirect and surrogate ads that promote betting and gambling at the height of the cricket and election season.

The government mulls cracking down on these advertisements that are in clear violation of the norms issued by the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), said a report citing sources.

window.googletag = window.googletag || {cmd: []}; googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.defineSlot('/21740140234/e4m_story_page_para3_small_horizontal_banner_3_728x90_normal', [728, 90], 'div-gpt-ad-1595331589677-0').addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.pubads().enableSingleRequest(); googletag.enableServices(); });

With the IPL and Lok Sabha Elections in full swing, there has been a spike in the use of betting apps, according to reports.

window.googletag = window.googletag || {cmd: []}; googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.defineSlot('/21740140234/e4m_story_page_para3_small_horizontal_banner_3_728x90_normal_next', [728, 90], 'div-gpt-ad-1601359261569-0').addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.pubads().enableSingleRequest(); googletag.enableServices(); });

By involving the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity), the centre wants to identify the violators with appropriate legal action and penalties.

CCPA's advisory was issued on March 6, 2024, with directives against the "increasing instances of direct as well as surrogate advertisement and endorsements of activities considered illegal such as betting or gambling.

"In response to increasing instances of advertisements promoting illegal activities such as betting and gambling, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued a comprehensive advisory. The advisory, by the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, emphasizes the prohibition of advertising, promotion, and endorsement of unlawful activities prohibited under various laws," said the advisory issued back in March.

It reiterated that the guidelines apply to all advertisements, irrespective of the medium used and warns celebrities and influencers that any engagement in the promotion or advertisement of online gambling and betting, given its unlawful status, renders one equally liable for participating in an illegal activity.
