OTT took the lion's share of the revenue in the fiscal, raking in Rs 31,800 crore

Digital media revenue stood at Rs 63,200 crore in FY 23-24: COTT Annual Report

Media and entertainment landscape is evolving constantly with a visible shift towards digital platforms becoming a well-known reality.

According to a recent report, the digital media revenue stood at Rs 63,200 crore in fiscal year 2023-24, out of which the share of OTT video platforms was Rs 31,800 crore.  

From this, Rs 21,900 crore were earned by AVOD platforms, Rs 9,900 crore by SVOD platforms. Rs 16,500 crore was earned by Meta; Rs 7,500 crore by digital audio platforms and the rest by others across sites, said the COTT Annual Report.

JioCinema, which has recently announced a Rs 29 per month subscription plan, topped the revenue share at 29.6% of the total revenue earned by OTT video platforms in FY 2023-24.

This was followed by Prime Video and Mini TV (18.9%), Disney+ Hotstar (12.8%), Netflix (6.5%) and Aha Video (2.4%). Zee5 and SonyLIV revenue share stood at 1.8% each.

As per the report, currently there are 88.8 crore internet users in India, out of which, 50.4 crore are OTT viewers.

As of January 2024, there were 13.3 crore unique AVOD viewers, which is projected to grow to 20.5 crore by January 2025. For SVOD, the projection is 11 crore by January 2025 from the current 8.8 crore unique viewers.

Disney+ Hotstar had the most unique viewers at 13.5 crore, followed by JioCinema at 12.5 crore.

The top 10 SVOD shows mentioned in the report, were watched mostly by men, while as per its list of top 10 female centric shows had a significant female-oriented audience.

Pankaj Krishna, Founder & CEO, Chrome DM, said, “India is clearly an AVOD market - which basically means we like free content and don’t mind getting exposed to Advertising Breaks. Currently with Digital Top-lines at almost Rs 65 billion, Rs 32 billion come from VOD - and of that, 70% comes from AVOD.”
