THE ROYAL WEDDING PERKS UP THE FASHION INDUSTRY

The weekend is over but the weekend hangover of the much-talked about royal wedding is not. The royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle took place on 19th May 2018 in St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle in the United Kingdom. The couple will be now known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Kensington Palace has announced. Approximately, 600 guests turned up for the Royal wedding including some famous names from the Hollywood fraternity as well as the Bollywood superstar Priyanka Chopra. It has been reported that almost 18 million Britons tuned into watch the Royal wedding. Furthermore, it is believed that more than two billion people worldwide watched the event, making it the fourth most watched royal wedding ever. The royal wedding was unsurprisingly one of the biggest television events of the year, with viewers also taking to social media to comment on the nuptials. HARRY WEDS MEGHAN, PERKED UP THE ECONOMY! Amidst all the celebrations, the royal wedding definitely created an impact on the economy. According to consulting firm Brand Finance, the couple’s big day was estimated to provide a boost of 1.05 billion Pounds, or $1.43 billion, to the U.K. economy. Moreover, fashion houses have been estimated to benefit to the tune of $200 million. ALL THAT GLITTERS COSTS LOTS OF DOLLARS! The Duchess of Sussex, has her own kind of style and people seem to love it. Within minutes of her appearing in a new outfit, fashion websites crash, items are sold out, retailers get orders for hundreds, if not thousands of extra garments just because she’s worn them. Now that’s some fan following. While people were thinking which designer would be chosen to design the wedding dress, Ms. Markle chose to sparkle in the creations of Clare Waight Keller, Director, Givenchy Couture. The silk cady dress, an understated yet feminine floor-length gown, featured a bateau neckline and a triple silk organza under skirt. She also chose a cathedral-length, five-meter-long trail trimmed with lace depicting flora from each of the 53 Commonwealth countries.  Now the question arises, how much did this royal wedding dress cost? The answer is a mind boggling $5,36,000 ! Despite of all the attention that the duchess grabbed, a few of the other names that managed to grab eyeballs include Oprah Winfrey, Amal Clooney, Victoria Beckham and Priyanka Chopra. Human rights lawyer Amal Clooney and Oprah Winfrey both wore Stella McCartney dresses. Priyanka Chopra, a friend of Meghan’s since the two met at the 2016 Elle 'Women in Television' dinner, wore Vivienne Westwood. FASCINATING FASCINATORS  The Royals are governed by traditions and protocols. Abiding by these, women are required to wear hats to all official occasions. The importance of these hats could also be seen in the “Etiquette Book” issued by the Buckingham Palace at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in 2011 which stated,” Ladies must dress appropriately for church. This rule includes covering one’s shoulders, wearing a hat to cover one’s head and not wearing anything garish to garner attention”. Hats re-emerged in form of fascinators at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (William and Kate) with top millinery designers like Philip Treacy, Rachel Trevor Morgan and Judy Bentinck taking the style quotient up a notch. India is comparatively a very nascent market when it comes to millinery, with Shilpa Chavan (Little Shilpa) being the known name in the industry.  However, as Philip Treacy had once mentioned during his visit to India that India is a land of turbans and other headgear, and called India a “hat heaven”, one cannot deny the fact that with increasing influence from the West, India’s millinery market definitely ought to grow.   Image Credit : Philip Treacy Instagram
