Social media video, podcast creators may now become ‘digital news broadcasters’

The new draft of the broadcasting bill may classify those who regularly post social media videos, podcasts or write-ups on current affairs as digital news broadcasters, says a media report.

As per the new broadcasting bill, news and current affair programmes will also include texts. At present, this section only covered audio and visual content.

It also requires broadcaster and network operators to comply with FDI policy and with other regulations related to disasters and natural calamities as per the existing law, the report further says.

The government can also lay down different set of guidelines for social media platforms and online advertisement intermediaries, it has been reported.

Moreover, OTT is no longer part of internet broadcasting services.

e4m had reported in June that the government is mulling a new proposal to be added to the Broadcast Services (Regulation) Bill, 2023.

The proposal looks at regulating User Generated Content put out by ‘professional creators’ on social media under this bill.

As of now under the IT rules that were issued by the government, social media content regulation comes under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). However, when the new proposal is passed, such content created by creator "professionals" on social media platforms like YouTube will be regulated by both the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) and MeitY. earlier media reports had said.
